How to Reheat Rice Safely

Data-assisted guide Updated Jun 2026 Built from structured cooking data and official food-safety guidance, written in our own words.

Reheat rice only once, until piping hot all the way through (steaming, at least 75°C). Add a splash of water to keep it moist, and never reheat rice more than once.

In the microwave

  1. Put the rice in a microwave-safe bowl and break up any clumps.
  2. Add a tablespoon of water per portion and cover loosely.
  3. Heat in short bursts, stirring between each, until piping hot throughout (steaming).

In a pan

  1. Add the rice to a pan with a splash of water.
  2. Heat over a medium heat, stirring, until steaming hot all the way through.

Food safety: Only reheat rice that was cooled quickly and stored in the fridge for no more than a day (or frozen). Reheat once only — never a second time — and make sure it's piping hot before serving.
