Platter of cooked sausages ready to serve

As a guide, allow 3 sausages of sausages per adult (normal appetite).

Quick calculator

For sausages as the main event — bangers and mash, a sausage traybake, or toad in the hole — allow about 3 standard sausages per adult. As part of a bigger spread with lots of sides, 2 each is usually enough.

How many to buy

  • Light eater: 2 sausages
  • Normal: 3 sausages
  • Hungry: 4 sausages
  • Child: 1–2 sausages

So a pack of 8 sausages feeds about 3 adults as a main, or a small family with a couple of children. Chipolatas are smaller, so allow a few more of those per person.

How this is worked out

For sausages as a main — with mash or in a traybake — allow about 3 standard sausages per adult. If they're part of a bigger spread like a fry-up or a barbecue with lots of other food, 2 each is usually plenty.
