15–20 minutes at 200°C (fan 180°C / 392°F, gas mark 6).
Homemade chips in the air fryer are crisp, golden and use a fraction of the oil of deep-frying. At 200°C they take about 15–20 minutes, depending on how thick you cut them.
The key to crisp chips
The most important step is drying the cut potatoes really well after rinsing — surface water turns to steam and stops them crisping. Toss them in just a tablespoon of oil, don’t overload the basket, and shake a few times during cooking so every side gets golden. Thicker chunky chips need a little longer; skinny fries are quicker.
Method
- Cut potatoes into chips, rinse and pat thoroughly dry.
- Toss with about 1 tablespoon of oil and season.
- Air-fry at 200°C for 15–20 minutes, shaking the basket 2–3 times.
- Cook until deep golden and crisp; season with salt and serve.
How to tell it's cooked
- Deep golden and crisp on the outside
- Fluffy inside when you bite in
- Not soft or bendy
